Can cats eat apples?
If your cat has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Apples are not toxic to cats, but they offer no nutritional benefit for obligate carnivores and can cause stomach upset if eaten in large quantities. The seeds and core must be removed because they contain trace amounts of cyanide and pose a choking hazard.
If you do feed it
- Remove all seeds, stems, and the core before serving.
- Peel the skin to make it easier to digest.
- Offer only a few small, bite-sized pieces as an occasional treat.
- Monitor your cat for any signs of vomiting or diarrhea after eating.
Watch out for
- seeds and core (contain cyanide)
- apple skin (hard to digest)
- sweetened or cooked apple products (high sugar)
