Can dogs eat watermelon?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
The flesh of the fruit is safe and provides hydration and vitamins, but the rind and seeds can cause intestinal blockages or stomach upset. Because watermelon is high in natural sugar, it should only be offered as an occasional snack rather than a regular part of their diet.
If you do feed it
- Remove all seeds and the tough green rind before serving.
- Cut the flesh into small, bite-sized chunks to prevent choking.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake.
- Introduce small amounts slowly to ensure your dog tolerates the sugar without digestive issues.
Watch out for
- seeds
- rind/skin
- sweetened or canned watermelon
- choking on large chunks
