Can dogs eat tuna?

Why

Tuna contains mercury which can build up in a dog's system over time if fed too frequently, and the high sodium content in many canned varieties can cause dehydration or electrolyte imbalances. It also lacks the complete balance of nutrients a dog needs for a full meal.

If you do feed it

• Choose plain tuna packed in water, not oil or brine, and ensure it has no added salt, garlic, or onions.
• Limit treats to a small amount no more than once a week, depending on the dog's size.
• Always drain the liquid thoroughly before serving to reduce sodium intake.
• Do not feed raw tuna due to the risk of parasites and thiaminase which can destroy vitamin B1.

Watch out for

• canned tuna packed in oil or heavy salt
• tuna with added garlic, onions, or spices
• raw or undercooked tuna
• tuna with bones
