Can dogs eat tuna?

Why
Tuna contains mercury which can build up in a dog's system over time if fed too frequently, and the high sodium content in many canned varieties can be harmful. It also lacks the complete balance of nutrients a dog needs, so it should never replace their regular meals.
If you do feed it
- Choose plain tuna packed in water, not oil or brine, and ensure it has no added salt or seasonings.
- Limit servings to a small amount, such as a teaspoon for small dogs or a tablespoon for large dogs, no more than once a week.
- Always drain the liquid thoroughly before serving to reduce sodium intake.
- Discontinue immediately if you notice any signs of digestive upset or allergic reaction.
Watch out for
- Tuna packed in oil or heavy brine
- Tuna with added garlic, onions, or spices
- Canned tuna with high sodium content
- Raw tuna which can contain parasites
