Can dogs eat tomatoes?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
The green parts of the tomato plant, including stems, leaves, and unripe green fruit, contain solanine which is toxic to dogs. Even ripe tomatoes should only be given as an occasional treat in very small quantities to avoid stomach upset.
If you do feed it
- Only offer fully ripe, red tomatoes; avoid all green parts, stems, and leaves.
- Serve fresh and plain without salt, sugar, spices, or sauces.
- Limit to a few small slices or a small whole cherry tomato as an occasional treat.
- Remove the skin if your dog has a sensitive stomach.
Watch out for
- Green tomatoes, stems, leaves, and vines
- Canned tomatoes with added salt or spices
- Tomato sauce, ketchup, and salsa
- Cherry tomato vines
