Can dogs eat rice?

Why

Rice is easily digestible and often recommended by veterinarians to help settle an upset stomach. It provides a source of carbohydrates and energy without being toxic, but it should only be given as a supplement to a balanced diet.

If you do feed it

• Serve only plain, cooked white rice without any salt, butter, onions, garlic, or seasonings.
• Limit rice to no more than 10% of your dog's total daily caloric intake to prevent weight gain.
• Ensure the rice is fully cooked and cooled to room temperature before serving to avoid choking or burns.
• Introduce rice slowly to monitor for any individual digestive sensitivities.

Watch out for

• Sweetened rice dishes like desserts or puddings
• Rice containing onions, garlic, or excessive salt
• Undercooked or raw rice which is hard to digest
• Brown rice in large quantities for dogs with sensitive stomachs
