Can dogs eat popcorn?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Unpopped kernels are hard and can damage teeth or cause choking, while butter, salt, and artificial sweeteners like xylitol can make dogs sick. Even plain popcorn offers little nutritional value and can be a choking hazard if eaten too quickly.
If you do feed it
- Serve only plain, air-popped kernels with no butter, salt, or oil.
- Remove all unpopped kernels before offering to your dog.
- Limit treats to a few small pieces to avoid stomach upset.
- Supervise your dog while they eat to ensure they chew properly.
Watch out for
- Unpopped kernels that can crack teeth or block the throat
- Butter, salt, and oil which cause digestive issues
- Xylitol (artificial sweetener) which is highly toxic
- Caramel, chocolate, or other flavored coatings
