Can dogs eat marshmallow?

Why

Marshmallows are made mostly of sugar and corn syrup, which can lead to weight gain, dental issues, and upset stomachs if your dog eats too much. They offer no nutritional benefit for dogs and can be a choking hazard if not broken into very small pieces.

If you do feed it

• Limit to a single small piece for a medium-sized dog, and even less for small breeds.
• Ensure the marshmallow is plain and free of chocolate, xylitol, or other toxic additives.
• Break the treat into tiny bits to prevent choking, especially for small dogs.
• Only offer this occasionally, not as a regular part of their diet.

Watch out for

• Chocolate-coated marshmallows (toxic)
• Marshmallows containing xylitol (extremely toxic)
• Large marshmallows that pose a choking risk
• Flavored or colored varieties with artificial sweeteners
