Can dogs eat mango?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
The flesh of the mango is a healthy treat rich in vitamins, but the large seed poses a choking hazard and contains trace amounts of cyanide. Additionally, the tough skin is difficult for dogs to digest and can cause stomach upset.
If you do feed it
- Remove the pit and peel the skin completely before serving.
- Cut the flesh into small, bite-sized chunks to prevent choking.
- Limit treats to a few small pieces occasionally due to high sugar content.
- Introduce slowly to check for any digestive sensitivity.
Watch out for
- The large, hard seed which can cause choking or intestinal blockage
- The tough outer skin which is hard to digest
- Sweetened or candied mango products with added sugars
- Mango pits which contain trace cyanide
