Can dogs eat honey?

Why
While honey is generally non-toxic, it contains a lot of sugar which can lead to weight gain and dental issues if fed too often. There is also a small risk of botulism spores in raw honey, which is why moderation is key.
If you do feed it
- Limit to a half-teaspoon for small dogs and one teaspoon for large dogs, no more than once or twice a week.
- Always choose raw or pasteurized honey without added flavors, xylitol, or other sweeteners.
- Avoid giving honey to puppies under one year old or dogs with diabetes or obesity.
- Ensure the honey is pure and free from any additives before offering it to your pet.
Watch out for
- Xylitol (an artificial sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs)
- Raw honey for very young puppies or immunocompromised dogs
- Honeycomb which can pose a choking hazard
- Flavored or infused honey products with added ingredients
