Can dogs eat honey?

Why

While raw honey is generally safe for adult dogs, it contains a lot of sugar which can lead to weight gain and dental issues if fed too often. There is also a small risk of botulism spores in raw honey, which is why it should be avoided for puppies and dogs with compromised immune systems.

If you do feed it

• Limit to a teaspoon or less for large dogs and much less for small dogs
• Only offer raw or pasteurized honey, never honeycomb with sharp edges
• Do not feed honey to puppies under one year old
• Treat honey as an occasional treat, not a daily supplement

Watch out for

• Puppies under 12 months
• Dogs with diabetes or obesity
• Honeycomb which can be a choking hazard
• Sweetened or flavored honey products
