Can dogs eat ham?

Why
Ham is high in salt and fat, which can lead to pancreatitis or dehydration if a dog eats too much. Many commercial hams also contain garlic, onion, or spices that are toxic to dogs, so the ingredient list must be checked carefully.
If you do feed it
- Choose plain, fully cooked ham with no added garlic, onion, or spices.
- Cut into tiny, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking and limit sodium intake.
- Offer only as a rare treat, not a regular part of their diet.
- Ensure the ham is low-sodium or rinse it to remove excess salt before serving.
Watch out for
- Garlic and onion powders
- Sweet glazes or sugary coatings
- Cured or smoked varieties with high nitrate levels
- Ham bones which can splinter and cause internal damage
