Can dogs eat coconut?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Coconut meat is high in saturated fats, which can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis if a dog eats too much. The hard outer shell and fibrous husk also pose a serious choking hazard or risk of intestinal blockage.
If you do feed it
- Offer only small, fresh pieces of unsweetened, dried, or fresh meat without the shell or husk.
- Limit treats to no more than a few small bites per day depending on the dog's size.
- Always introduce coconut slowly to check for digestive sensitivity.
- Avoid any coconut products containing added sugars, xylitol, or chocolate.
Watch out for
- hard shells and husks
- sweetened or flavored coconut products
- coconut oil in large quantities
- chocolate-covered coconut treats
