Can dogs eat coconut?

Why

While the meat itself is not toxic, it is very high in saturated fats which can trigger pancreatitis or upset stomachs in sensitive dogs. Additionally, the hard outer shell and husk pose a serious choking hazard or risk of intestinal blockage if swallowed.

If you do feed it

• Offer only small, fresh pieces of the white meat without the hard shell or husk.
• Limit treats to a few small bites occasionally, as too much can cause diarrhea or vomiting.
• Avoid any coconut products containing added sugars, xylitol, or chocolate.
• Introduce slowly to monitor for any allergic reactions or digestive upset.

Watch out for

• sweetened coconut products (added sugar/xylitol)
• coconut oil (very high fat, use sparingly)
• coconut milk (often contains additives or high fat)
