Can dogs eat cheese?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Cheese is high in fat and lactose, which can cause stomach upset, vomiting, or diarrhea in some dogs, especially those with sensitivities. It is also calorie-dense, so overfeeding can lead to unwanted weight gain.
If you do feed it
- Offer only a tiny piece of low-fat, plain cheese as an occasional treat.
- Avoid cheeses with added ingredients like garlic, onions, or grapes.
- Monitor your dog closely after the first time to check for digestive upset.
- Limit treats to less than 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake.
Watch out for
- Sweetened or flavored cheeses
- Cheeses containing raisins, grapes, or chocolate
- Blue cheeses which can contain mold toxins
- High-fat rinds or skins
