Can dogs eat cashews?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
While plain cashews won't poison your dog, they are very high in fat which can lead to stomach upset or pancreatitis if too many are eaten. They also pose a choking hazard and can cause weight gain if fed regularly.
If you do feed it
- Serve only plain, unsalted, and unsweetened cashews
- Limit to 1 or 2 small nuts for small dogs and 3-4 for large dogs
- Always crush or chop nuts to prevent choking
- Introduce slowly to check for digestive sensitivity
Watch out for
- Salted or flavored cashews
- Cashews with shells or skins
- Sweetened or chocolate-covered varieties
- Cashew butter with xylitol
