Can dogs eat cantaloupe?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
This fruit is non-toxic and offers vitamins and hydration, but its high sugar content means it should only be an occasional treat. The tough rind can cause intestinal blockages, and the seeds pose a choking hazard or digestive upset.
If you do feed it
- Remove all seeds and the tough green rind before serving.
- Cut the flesh into small, bite-sized cubes appropriate for your dog's size.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake.
- Introduce slowly to check for any stomach upset or allergic reaction.
Watch out for
- seeds
- rind
- sweetened or canned versions
- large chunks
