Can dogs eat bacon?

Why

Bacon is extremely high in fat and sodium, which can trigger pancreatitis or cause stomach upset in dogs. The high salt content can also lead to excessive thirst and potential sodium ion poisoning if consumed in large quantities.

If you do feed it

• Offer only a tiny piece (less than a quarter of a strip) as a rare treat, not a regular food item.
• Ensure the bacon is fully cooked and unseasoned, with no added garlic, onion, or spices.
• Feed it only to a healthy adult dog with no history of pancreatitis or weight issues.
• Always provide fresh water immediately after to help flush excess salt.

Watch out for

• Cooked bacon with garlic or onion powder
• Cured or smoked bacon with high sodium levels
• Crispy burnt pieces that are hard to digest
• Raw bacon which carries bacteria risks
