Can dogs eat asparagus?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
The fibrous stalks are difficult for dogs to digest and may cause vomiting or diarrhea if eaten in large quantities. Additionally, the sharp tips can pose a choking risk or scratch the mouth and throat.
If you do feed it
- Serve only the tender tips and chop them into very small, bite-sized pieces
- Always cook the asparagus thoroughly without any salt, butter, garlic, or onions
- Limit treats to no more than a few small pieces occasionally, not as a regular meal
- Monitor your dog closely after the first feeding for any signs of digestive distress
Watch out for
- raw tough stalks
- large unchopped pieces
- seasoned or buttered asparagus
- garlic or onion toppings
