Can dogs eat almonds?

Why
Almonds are difficult for dogs to digest and can lead to pancreatitis or an intestinal blockage, especially if the dog eats too many. The hard texture also presents a significant choking risk, and the high fat content can cause vomiting or diarrhea.
If you do feed it
- Serve only raw, unsalted, and unflavored almonds, never roasted or seasoned.
- Limit to one or two small pieces for a large dog, and avoid giving them to small dogs entirely.
- Always supervise your dog while they eat to ensure they chew thoroughly and do not choke.
- Remove the hard outer shell completely before offering any part of the nut.
Watch out for
- Salted, roasted, or flavored almonds which contain harmful additives
- Almond butter with xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs
- Whole almonds which pose a choking hazard
- Macadamia nuts which are often confused with almonds but are actually dangerous
